Active: Hypochlorous Acid (0.008%) Inactive: Electrolyzed Water (96.524%), Sodium Magnesium Fluorosilicate (3.000%), Sodium Phosphate (0.400%), Sodium Chloride (0.0066%), Sodium Hypochlorite (0.002%).
The active-ingredient in all Vetericyn products is Hypochlorous acid (HOCl - also known as hydrogen hypochlorite). In some products, sodium hypochlorite is used in trace amounts as a preservative. The pH of Vetericyn is manufactured in the appropriate physiological range, unlike Dakin's Solution, a diluted bleach with sodium bicarbonate, which has a pH > 11 (neutral pH is 7 - below 7 is acidic, while above that is alkaline). At an appropriate physiological pH, diluted bleach is unstable and has limited efficacy as an antimicrobial. Laboratory tests show that in solution, Vetericyn is up to 70X more effective against bacterial than diluted bleach, yet is 100% nontoxic.
